Scottish actor James McAvoy has made a surprising personal revelation, confirming he secretly welcomed his second son with his wife Lisa Liberati four years ago. The 46-year-old star shared this intimate detail while reflecting on the distinct experiences of fatherhood at different stages of his life.
Fatherhood in His Forties: Easier Yet More Demanding
McAvoy contrasted his current parenting journey with his earlier experience raising his now 15-year-old son Brendan, whom he co-parents with his ex-wife Anne-Marie Duff. He explained to The Guardian that becoming a father again at age 42 presented both advantages and challenges.
'Having a kid at 42 is definitely easier in some ways. I worry less. I'm a bit more philosophical,' McAvoy stated. 'But it's also harder, because you're just older and tireder.'
Balancing Acting and Family Responsibilities
The actor described navigating the dual pressures of his professional career and family life, noting particular stresses that emerged during film production. 'I'm getting all that first-timer stress in my 40s. When we were shooting the film, I’d wake up at 2.30am with the film buzzing in my head,' he revealed.
McAvoy suggested that launching an acting career typically demands youthful energy and dedication. 'That’s the time that you work your socks off, burn the midnight oil, run the extra mile – and usually when you’re doing that, you’re in your 20s,' he observed, characterizing professional beginnings as 'a young man's game.'
Relationship Timeline with Lisa Liberati
McAvoy and Liberati first connected on the Philadelphia set of the 2016 thriller Split, where he played a leading role and she served as a production assistant for director M. Night Shyamalan. At that time, McAvoy was married to actress Anne-Marie Duff, though their 11-year marriage was ending.
Just two months after his divorce was finalized, the couple publicly announced their relationship through Instagram posts from a fancy dress party. Persistent rumors of their marriage circulated for years, particularly after director Jamie Lloyd—a close friend of the Glasgow-born actor—was overheard referring to Liberati as McAvoy's 'wife' in 2019, mentioning they had wed 'recently.'
Domestic Life and Recent Developments
The couple divides their time primarily between London and Philadelphia, where Liberati's parents reside. In July 2020, they upgraded from McAvoy's modest city apartment—which he occupied after leaving the £1.9 million four-bedroom home he shared with Duff—to a more spacious London residence following the lockdown period.
McAvoy officially confirmed his marriage to Liberati in 2022. Professionally, he has recently made his directorial debut with California Schemin', a musical biographical film about two Scottish men who deceived the music industry by impersonating an established Californian rap duo.
