Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright Performs Emergency Surgery on Injured Pony

Veterinarian Peter Wright, star of the Channel 5 programme The Yorkshire Vet, faced a challenging emergency just minutes into a recent episode. He travelled to the North Yorkshire coast to treat a one-year-old pony named Sparkles, who had sustained a deep cut on her leg after running into a fence.

The pony's owner expressed anxiety, saying, “I am a little bit worried. We will just have to wait and see what happens and see how she goes.” Wright acknowledged the difficulty, noting the wound's awkward location in the “cook of the elbow to the low portion of the flap” and the significant blood supply involved.

Despite the pressure, Wright performed an emergency 'al fresco' surgery on Sparkles. He remarked, “It’s going quite well really. I’m quite pleased with how it’s coming together.” The operation was successful, and when he later checked on the pony's recovery, he was pleased to see she was healing well.

Wright advised the owner to apply a little oil to the scab as it falls off to keep the skin supple, predicting minimal scarring. In other segments of the episode, Wright visited a wildlife sanctuary in Whitby to assist with two bullied swans, while colleague Julian Norton treated a therapy sheep losing its wool.
