A military base in Georgia was placed on lockdown following reports of an active shooter on Wednesday. Fort Stewart, home to the US Army's 3rd Infantry Division, is currently under heightened security as authorities work to secure the area.
Initial reports indicate that gunfire was heard near a barracks on the base, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. Military police and local law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, urging personnel to shelter in place.
Emergency Response Activated
Base officials confirmed the lockdown via social media, stating: "Fort Stewart is currently on lockdown due to reports of an active shooter. All personnel are advised to avoid the area and follow emergency protocols."
Helicopters were seen circling the premises while emergency vehicles flooded the installation. Nearby Hunter Army Airfield, a sub-installation of Fort Stewart, was also placed on precautionary lockdown.
Ongoing Investigation
As of Wednesday afternoon, details about potential casualties or the shooter's motive remained unconfirmed. The Army's Criminal Investigation Command has taken lead on the case.
"We're treating this as an active situation until we can confirm the base is fully secure," a military spokesperson told reporters during a brief press conference.
Fort Stewart, located about 40 miles southwest of Savannah, is one of the Army's largest training bases, housing approximately 18,000 soldiers and 11,000 family members.
