An active shooter alert has triggered a lockdown at Fort Stewart, a major US Army base in Georgia, as authorities scramble to assess the threat.
The base, home to the 3rd Infantry Division, was placed on immediate lockdown after reports of an armed individual on the premises. Military police and emergency responders swiftly mobilised, securing key areas while urging personnel to shelter in place.
Emergency Response Underway
Officials confirmed the lockdown via social media, stating: "Fort Stewart is currently on lockdown due to reports of an active shooter. All personnel are advised to avoid the area until further notice."
Eyewitnesses reported seeing heavily armed response teams sweeping buildings near the installation's Donovan Field, though no shots were heard in the vicinity.
Base Security Protocols Activated
The incident follows heightened security measures across US military installations nationwide. Fort Stewart, spanning over 280,000 acres, houses nearly 20,000 soldiers and civilian workers.
Local law enforcement has joined military police in securing the perimeter while investigators work to determine whether this was a genuine threat or possible training exercise miscommunication.
As the situation develops, base commanders have suspended all non-essential activities, with family members advised to monitor official channels for updates.
