NHS urges hay fever sufferers to shower and change clothes this week
NHS tells hay fever sufferers to shower and change clothes

The NHS is advising millions of hay fever sufferers across the UK to shower and change their clothes as soon as they return home this week, as elevated pollen levels are expected to cause significant discomfort.

Pollen forecast and impact

According to the Met Office, pollen levels will reach 'Very High' in some parts of the UK from June 15. Hay fever affects approximately 16 million people in the UK, with 20% to 26% of adults and 10% to 15% of children suffering from this common allergy.

NHS guidance

The NHS has issued an alert online, stating: "There are high levels of pollen across some parts of the country over the coming days. Hay fever is a common allergy that causes sneezing, coughing and itchy eyes." While there is no cure, the NHS recommends showering and changing clothes after being outdoors to reduce symptoms. Showering washes away pollen from skin and scalp, while changing clothes prevents pollen from settling on indoor surfaces.

Additional tips from the NHS

  • Apply petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) around the nostrils to trap pollen
  • Wear wraparound sunglasses, a mask, or a wide-brimmed hat to keep pollen away from the nose and eyes
  • Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible
  • Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
  • Use a pollen filter in car air vents and a HEPA filter in vacuum cleaners

When symptoms are worse

The NHS website notes that hay fever symptoms are typically worse between late March and September, especially in warm, humid, and windy conditions. Unlike a cold, hay fever can last for weeks or months.

Sufferers are advised to speak to a pharmacist for advice and effective treatments, such as antihistamines or steroid nasal sprays. If symptoms worsen or do not improve with pharmacy medicines, they should visit a GP.
