A Jet2 flight bound for Glasgow from Alicante declared a mid-air emergency as it approached the airport on Saturday afternoon. Flight LS178 departed Alicante Airport at around 1:40 PM local time on June 13, heading to the UK. The Boeing 737-8 was scheduled to land at Glasgow Airport at approximately 3:40 PM.
Emergency Declaration Over Irish Sea
About two and a half hours into the flight, the crew initiated the 7700 squawk procedure, the international signal for a general in-flight emergency. Data from FlightRadar24 showed the plane traveling north at around 23,000 feet over the Irish Sea near Stranraer at the time of the alert.
The aircraft continued north over Dumfries and Galloway and Ayrshire toward Glasgow Airport, where it landed safely shortly after 3:40 PM. The airline confirmed that the alert was triggered due to a customer requiring medical assistance.
Airline Statement
A Jet2 spokesman said: “Our crew followed procedure and requested a priority landing due to a customer requiring medical attention.” Squawking 7700 indicates a general emergency, which can cover technical or medical issues. This procedure allows air traffic controllers and ground crews to respond effectively.
