EastEnders Fans Terrified for Denise After Leukaemia Diagnosis

EastEnders fans are terrified for Denise Fox after utterly devastating scenes aired. The beloved character, played by Diane Parish, has faced numerous challenges during her twenty-year tenure on the show, including abusive relationships, the death of her fiancé, and being imprisoned by a serial killer. However, her latest battle may be her most difficult yet.

Denise Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia

In a recent episode, Denise was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a fast-growing and aggressive type of blood cancer. The diagnosis came amid the 'night that changes everything', as Denise struggled to cope with the news. While other residents attended Ross Marshall and Vicki Fowler's wedding, Denise retreated to Fox & Hair, where Yolande Trueman found her in distress.

Denise broke down to Yolande, expressing her terror over the diagnosis. Despite a consultant urging her to return to the hospital for immediate treatment, Denise delayed to support her daughter Chelsea, whose son Jordan had been knocked down by Ian Beale. Yolande encouraged Denise to confide in her family, and eventually, she told her partner Jack Branning.

Jack urged Denise to seek treatment, but she wanted to be there for Chelsea. With Jack's help, Phil Mitchell also urged Denise to go to the hospital. During Kim and Howie's engagement party, Denise emotionally revealed her diagnosis to everyone in the pub, stating she was ready to begin treatment.

Fan Reactions

Fans have taken to social media to share their heartbreak over the scenes. One viewer urged Denise to see a doctor, while another said the Walford legend was 'making me bawl'. Many expressed fear that the show might kill off Denise, calling it a potential monumental mistake. Others noted foreshadowing but hoped Denise would survive.

Concerns were also raised about the fate of Denise, with some fans referencing past character deaths like Ronnie and Roxy. The emotional impact of the storyline has been significant, with viewers calling for a protection circle around Denise.

Blood Cancer UK Speaks Out

Helen Rowntree, CEO of Blood Cancer UK, commented on the importance of Denise's story. She said it was a privilege to advise the EastEnders team to ensure the storyline reflects real experiences of people living with blood cancer. Blood cancers like AML are among the hardest to treat, often requiring urgent intensive chemotherapy and long hospital stays. Awareness of blood cancer is low, with many describing it as a hidden cancer.

Rowntree highlighted that experiences of blood cancer can vary by ethnicity, and being Black with an aggressive blood cancer can bring additional challenges. She hopes viewers gain a greater understanding of the impact of blood cancer.
