Owning a dog comes with significant financial commitments, from food and vaccinations to unexpected vet bills. However, certain breeds are less susceptible to illness, potentially saving owners money. Dr Liza Cahn, a veterinarian at Embrace Pet Insurance, has identified 10 breeds known for their robust health.
The Australian Cattle Dog is a remarkably hardy breed, thriving on exercise and rarely falling ill. Similarly, the Border Collie, one of the most intelligent breeds, stays fit through its love of work. The Australian Shepherd is also bred for toughness and resilience.
Siberian Huskies, despite their demanding coats, are naturally strong and hearty. The quiet Basenji, which cannot bark due to its unique vocal cords, is both healthy and peaceful. The ancient Shiba Inu boasts robust genetics and a compact, fox-like appearance.
Beagles, as active hunting dogs, maintain excellent fitness. Labrador Retrievers, a family favourite, can flourish with a balanced diet and exercise. Smaller breeds, such as the Chihuahua, are less prone to complications. Cross-breeds like the Labradoodle benefit from 'hybrid vigour', reducing hereditary conditions.
