Lions Hero Jamie Roberts Now an NHS Doctor

Wales and British & Irish Lions star Jamie Roberts has volunteered his services to work for the NHS in the fight against coronavirus. The qualified doctor, who recently returned from a spell with the Stormers in South Africa, contacted the Cardiff and Vale Health Board to offer assistance.

Roberts has taken up a position as a clinical innovation fellow, focusing on motivational and communications roles. He said: 'I just thought how can I play my part in this challenge we are all facing? I am sitting on a medical degree from Cardiff University. I graduated in 2013 and did a bit of research between then and now.'

The 94-cap centre emphasised he will not be performing skilled clinical work but will help motivate staff and ensure the right messages reach the public. He described the energy and enthusiasm among NHS staff as 'palpable' and 'inspiring'.

Reflecting on the crisis, Roberts said: 'None of us have ever experienced anything like this. We all have a role to play. I really feel this could be Wales’ greatest ever team effort.' He urged the public to play their part, no matter how insignificant their role may seem.

Roberts also spoke about his truncated stay in South Africa, saying they 'literally got the last plane out' and described leaving Cape Town as a 'pretty stressful week'. He added: 'As soon as you find yourself moaning, you have a bit of perspective.'
