Florida Man's Paradise Vacation Turns into Medical Nightmare After Flesh-Eating Infection
A 62-year-old Florida man is battling for his life after contracting a severe flesh-eating disease during what was supposed to be a celebratory New Year's vacation in the Bahamas. Brian Roush, from Fort Lauderdale, travelled to the sun-drenched islands with his long-term girlfriend, Tonia Buford Stinson, to ring in the new year, but the trip took a devastating turn that has left him hospitalised for over a month.
Innocuous Injury Leads to Life-Threatening Crisis
While enjoying the tropical getaway, Roush tripped and sustained a minor scrape on his ankle. Dismissing it as a trivial injury, he cleaned the wound and continued with holiday activities, including the popular excursion of swimming with pigs. However, within hours of returning home to Florida, his condition deteriorated rapidly. His daughter, Brittany Roush, recounted to local media that her father suddenly became violently ill and unresponsive, with his ankle erupting into painful blisters.
Roush was urgently admitted to Broward Hospital, where medical staff immediately intubated him and placed him on a ventilator. Doctors suspected necrotizing fasciitis, a rapidly spreading bacterial infection often described as a flesh-eating disease, which attacks tissue beneath the skin through open wounds. He was rushed into emergency surgery to remove infected fluid, a procedure that proved critical to his survival.
Aggressive Treatment and Daunting Prognosis
To eradicate the infection, surgeons were forced to remove most of the skin from Roush's ankle down to the bone. Initially, he was given a less than ten percent chance of survival as the infection triggered multiple organ failures. Throughout the first week, his lungs, kidneys, and liver all failed before he began showing signs of recovery with intensive antibiotic treatment.
Despite clearing much of the infection, Roush's kidneys have not regained function, necessitating daily dialysis sessions. He has also suffered significant heart damage and contracted secondary infections during his lengthy hospital stay. Additionally, he developed severe ICU myopathy, a condition causing profound muscle weakness, which has resulted in the loss of his ability to walk and use most of his limbs, requiring multiple blood transfusions.
Family's Anguish and Hopeful Resilience
Brittany Roush described the ordeal as profoundly distressing, stating, "You just can't explain the experience of seeing your loved one so weak and feeble. It's been very, very difficult." The family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical expenses, noting that the doctor's swift diagnosis and intervention were lifesaving.
Remarkably, amidst the painful surgeries and relentless treatments, Roush has maintained a positive attitude. His family reports that he cracks jokes and lavishes compliments on nursing staff to keep spirits high. Brittany hopes he will be transferred to a rehabilitation facility soon, where he may need to stay for up to six months to regain strength and mobility.
