Households are being urged to follow a '1-hour rule' this June to stay cool during hot weather. The timing of your shower can make a significant difference in regulating body temperature and improving sleep quality.
According to Emily Robertson, an in-house expert at Mira Showers, the optimal time to shower is about 60 to 90 minutes before you plan to sleep. This allows your body to cool down naturally, signaling to your brain that it is time for rest.
Why a Warm Evening Shower Works
Robertson explains that a warm shower may seem counterproductive, but it actually helps your body cool down more efficiently before bed. She recommends ending the shower with approximately 30 seconds of cool water to kickstart the body's natural cooling process.
This routine not only promotes better sleep but also offers surprising skin benefits. Dr. Ed Robinson, a skincare expert, notes that perspiration can irritate the skin, and sweat mixed with oil, dirt, and bacteria can clog pores and cause acne. An evening shower removes makeup, sunscreen, pollution, and grime accumulated during the day.
For individuals with eczema-prone or sensitive skin, a quick lukewarm rinse before bed can prevent itching and flares triggered by sweat. Dr. Robinson advises washing off the day's residue to avoid skin irritation.
Establishing a Consistent Routine
Robertson emphasizes that the body thrives on patterns. Showering at the same time each night as part of a wind-down routine helps the brain recognize sleep cues, making it easier to fall asleep when hitting the pillow.
As temperatures rise in June, adopting this simple habit can lead to cooler, more comfortable nights and healthier skin.
