Florida Zoo's Unorthodox Strategy Preserves Vision of Endangered African Rhino
What initially seemed like an absurd proposition—corralling a wild rhinoceros into a confined chute to administer daily eyedrops—has proven to be a revolutionary success story in wildlife conservation. Animal behavior specialists from Florida's Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society executed this unconventional plan in Zimbabwe during August, ultimately saving the eyesight of an endangered southern white rhino named Thuza who was suffering from a potentially fatal parasitic eye infection.
'Completely Ridiculous' Idea That Worked
Daniel Terblanche, security manager with Imvelo Safari Lodges, openly admitted that local conservationists would never have conceived such an approach. "Believe me, we didn't think of it; it was a completely ridiculous idea to us," Terblanche acknowledged. "But without trying all of the things that we could to rectify that situation, we would have been in trouble, I think."
The crisis emerged within Zimbabwe's groundbreaking Community Rhino Conservation Initiative, which—with support from Imvelo Safari Lodges—has been reintroducing southern white rhinos to communal lands for the first time in the nation's history. The program's future became jeopardized when Thuza developed severe eye problems that threatened to leave him blind.
Conservation Program at Risk
Margo McKnight, CEO and President of Palm Beach Zoo, learned about the emergency during a visit to the area last year when Imvelo Safari Lodges managing director Mark Butcher explained the gravity of the situation. "This rhino had bleeding eyes. He was rubbing his eyes," Butcher described. "And I was looking at a potential where this guy was gonna lose his eyesight. And this is in a pilot project that's got fantastic vision for a future for conservation throughout Africa."
The stakes couldn't have been higher for the conservation initiative. With southern white rhinos classified as near threatened—approximately 16,000 remain in the wild—each individual animal represents significant conservation value. Poaching and habitat loss continue to threaten the species' survival, making every successful intervention critically important.
Behavioral Training Transforms Treatment
Thad and Angi Lacinak, founders of Precision Behavior, traveled from Florida to Zimbabwe to collaborate with anti-poacher scouts. They developed their innovative approach based on techniques perfected at Palm Beach Zoo, where animals learn to voluntarily participate in their own medical care through positive reinforcement training.
"With this few animals in this location in Africa, it was essential that we save all of them," emphasized Angi Lacinak. "So when they called and said, Thuza is going to lose his eye, a blind rhino is a dead rhino. So no matter what it took, we were going to go over there and try."
The strategy involved coaxing Thuza into a tight space using his favorite foods, then gradually desensitizing him to human contact and having water squirted near his face. Through patient, systematic training, the team achieved remarkable progress.
Remarkable Results and Skill Transfer
"Within about a week, we were actually putting the eye drops strategically in his eyes while he held for it," Lacinak reported. "And by the end of two weeks, we had transferred that skill set to not only Daniel, who was in charge of leading their guards, but to the guards."
This knowledge transfer proved crucial for the treatment's sustainability. Local conservation staff now successfully administer Thuza's daily medication, ensuring the rhino's continued recovery and the program's ongoing success.
"They're consistently getting the medications into his eyes every day," Lacinak confirmed. "And the rhinos are just thriving now and they feel really, really confident that this solved their problem."
The successful intervention demonstrates how innovative animal behavior techniques developed in zoo settings can have transformative applications in wild conservation scenarios. While Thuza and other rhinos continue to face numerous challenges in their natural habitat, at least one critical threat—the loss of his eyesight—has been definitively addressed through this collaborative international effort.
