Sir David Attenborough's Favourite UK Wildlife Sanctuary
The Farne Islands, a stunning archipelago off the Northumberland coast, have been declared by legendary broadcaster Sir David Attenborough as one of his "favourite places" for observing wildlife in Britain. This remote haven, accessible only by boat from Seahouses harbour, offers an unparalleled glimpse into the nation's natural heritage, featuring a spectacular array of bird species, marine mammals, and rugged coastal landscapes.
A Thriving Seabird Colony
During the warmer months, the islands become a bustling hub for avian life, with approximately 43,000 pairs of breeding puffins adorning the rugged cliffs. These colourful birds, known for their distinctive beaks and comical waddles, are a major draw for visitors. In early summer, the population swells to around 200,000 breeding seabirds, including Arctic terns, guillemots, eider ducks, razorbills, and cormorants, creating a cacophony of sound and activity that is rare to witness elsewhere in the UK.
Marine Mammals and Seals
Beyond the birds, the Farne Islands host a substantial colony of Atlantic grey seals, with adorable white seal pups often visible bobbing in the waters or resting on the shores. Dolphins are also occasionally spotted among the lapping waves, adding to the marine diversity. The islands' isolation has allowed these species to flourish, making it a prime location for nature enthusiasts and photographers seeking intimate encounters with wildlife.
Conservation and Accessibility
Experts at Arbtech have highlighted the Farne Islands as an internationally significant breeding colony, emphasising the importance of conservation efforts in the face of a 19% decline in UK wildlife populations since 1970. The optimal time to visit is between mid-April and late July, when the seabird colony is most active.
