47 Million Sweet Tubs Fuel UK's Festive Plastic Waste Crisis
47m sweet tubs create UK Christmas plastic waste mountain

Britain's festive sweet tooth is creating a monumental plastic waste problem, with new research revealing a staggering 47 million plastic sweet tubs will enter homes this Christmas.

A Sweet Surge of Plastic

The study, commissioned by pub company and brewer Greene King, found that 71% of adults with a sweet tooth will receive at least one tub filled with chocolates, sweets, or biscuits. When scaled up nationally, this equates to tens of millions of new containers.

To visualise the scale, if all these tubs were placed end to end, they would stretch for an astonishing 7,400 miles. That's more than eight times the length of the United Kingdom from Land's End to John o' Groats.

The Recycling Gap: Good Intentions, Wrong Bins

While the desire to recycle is high, the execution is critically flawed. The research highlights a significant gap between intention and action. Although 78% of UK adults say they recycle their plastic tubs, most are doing it incorrectly.

A worrying 67% place them in standard kerbside collections, where they often cannot be processed properly, leading to a high risk of the tubs ending up in landfill or being incinerated. In reality, only 11% of people are recycling their tubs correctly, with a mere 5% using specialist recycling points.

Incorrect disposal isn't the only issue driving waste. A further 61% of British adults admit to hoarding empty plastic tubs for over a year, with good intentions for reuse turning into long-term clutter in homes across the country.

Pubs Offer a Community Solution

In response to this growing issue, Greene King has launched a nationwide initiative to tackle festive plastic waste. The company is urging people to bring their clean, empty plastic tubs to participating Greene King pubs across the UK.

The scheme, called Tub2Pub, provides an accessible recycling point at the heart of local communities. Launched in 2021, it ensures tubs are recycled properly. The collected plastic is then transformed into new products like picnic benches.

The initiative also supports a vital cause. For every tub recycled, the scheme helps raise funds for Greene King's charity partner, Macmillan Cancer Support. To date, Tub2Pub has collected 54,665kg of plastic (approximately 475,348 tubs), raising an impressive £35,247 for Macmillan.

Vance Fairman-Smith, Greene King's Group Supply Chain Director, said: "Our aim is to divert thousands more tubs from incineration or landfill. Our message is simple: don't let plastic tubs gather dust for another year or end up in the wrong bin. Bring them to your local Greene King pub and we'll do the hard work for you."

The public can take clean, empty plastic tubs to all participating Greene King pubs between 1st January and 15th February 2026. This drive offers a practical way to start the new year more sustainably while supporting a crucial charity.
