Former Labour leader Ed Miliband found himself at the centre of a dramatic climate protest on Thursday when activists ambushed his luxury Bentley during a visit to his Doncaster constituency.
Confrontation in Bentley
The tense standoff unfolded in the South Yorkshire village of Bentley, where approximately 20 protesters from the campaign group Just Stop Oil surrounded the politician's vehicle. Footage from the scene shows the black chauffeur-driven car being swarmed by demonstrators chanting and waving banners.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed they attended the incident following reports of a protest. Officers were seen speaking with both Mr Miliband's team and the activists during the 20-minute confrontation.
Protesters' Demands
The climate activists targeted the shadow Climate Change Secretary over what they describe as the Labour Party's "failure to commit to ending new fossil fuel projects." Their banners bore slogans including "Make polluters pay" and "No new oil."
One protester could be heard shouting through the car window: "When you're surrounded by climate collapse, you'll know who to blame."
Political Response
Mr Miliband, who serves as MP for Doncaster North, was visiting his constituency when the incident occurred. A spokesperson for the politician stated: "While we respect the right to peaceful protest, it's important that these matters are discussed respectfully and without intimidation."
The incident highlights the growing pressure on politicians from environmental groups, particularly those in shadow climate roles. Just Stop Oil has increasingly targeted high-profile political figures in recent months.
Police Intervention
South Yorkshire Police managed the situation without making any arrests. A police spokesperson said: "Officers engaged with all parties to ensure the protest remained peaceful and to facilitate safe passage for the vehicle."
The incident concluded without injury or damage to property, though it underscores the increasingly confrontational tactics being employed by climate activist groups across the UK.
