Period drama enthusiasts are fiercely loyal to Jane Austen adaptations, and the 2005 film version of Pride and Prejudice is often hailed as a standout. Starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, the movie is praised for its romantic tension and exceptional production quality, earning an 87% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The British Film Institute selected it for their top 10 list of greatest Austen adaptations, highlighting its 'sun-dappled cinematography' and 'luscious score'. Fans particularly love the chemistry between the leads, with one viewer calling it 'the best time period piece movie ever'.
While the BBC's 1995 miniseries is considered more faithful, many argue the 2005 film excels in emotional impact and accessibility. 'The movie dials all the aesthetic and emotional elements up to 11,' said one fan. Another noted it's 'more accessible to an audience that isn't already a fan of the story'.
Pride and Prejudice (2005) is currently streaming on Netflix UK until 20 June. A new Netflix series starring Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden is expected later this year.
