Matt Tebbutt's 'Proper Newsreader' Gaffe Sparks Awkward BBC Exchange
Matt Tebbutt apologises to Naga Munchetty after remark

BBC presenter Matt Tebbutt found himself in hot water and issuing a swift apology following a clumsy remark made to BBC Breakfast hosts Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt.

An Awkward On-Air Moment

The incident occurred during a live link on Saturday 17th January 2026. As the BBC Breakfast presenters handed over to Tebbutt for a preview of his show, the 52-year-old Saturday Kitchen host made an off-the-cuff comment that immediately backfired.

Referring to his guest, renowned broadcaster Clive Myrie, Tebbutt said, "We've got an actual proper newsreader in." Realising his error as the words left his mouth, a red-faced Tebbutt covered his face with his hand.

Munchetty's Sharp Retort

The comment was perceived as a slight against Munchetty and Stayt, both established journalists. Tebbutt quickly tried to clarify, stammering, "Sorry! I didn't mean that. We've got a newsreader."

Naga Munchetty was quick to respond, putting the presenter firmly in his place. "Oh, a newsreader? You've got a newsreader, have you?" she retorted. "Well, we're journalists. So, if you want to call Clive Myrie a newsreader, good luck with the rest of your programme, ok?"

Her comeback drew chuckles from others in the Saturday Kitchen studio, leaving Tebbutt scrambling to move the conversation forward.

Recovery and Culinary Chat

Attempting to smooth things over, Tebbutt acknowledged his blunder: "Good point, anyway, that came out wrong! Today's guest is newsreader, journalist and global explorer, Clive Myrie."

The conversation then turned to the show's regular features, with the 61-year-old Mastermind host discussing his love for comfort food during "Pie January" and revealing a recent aversion to mushrooms. "I used to love them but the last couple of years, I've completely gone off them," Myrie explained.

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One and iPlayer, while Saturday Kitchen is broadcast weekly at 10am on BBC One.
