Frank Lampard, the Coventry City manager and former Chelsea and England midfielder, has opened up about the secrets to his successful marriage with TV presenter Christine Lampard. The couple, who will celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary later this year, met at the Pride of Britain Awards in 2009. Lampard says their relationship thrives on mutual support and shared humour.
“What keeps me and Christine going is we’re there to support each other and we make each other laugh,” he said in an exclusive interview. “We have a similar sense of humour. Christine’s quite sharp and we’re normally thinking the same thing, so the same situations make us laugh – I think laughing together is important for a happy marriage.”
The couple have two young children, Patricia, 6, and Freddie, 4, while Lampard also has two teenage daughters from a previous relationship. He praised Christine for balancing her own successful career with being a full-time mum, noting that she takes on the majority of parenting responsibilities. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say Christine takes more responsibility for our children, she’s a fantastic mum,” he added.
Lampard, 46, also discussed his work at Coventry City, where he has transformed the team from relegation candidates to play-off contenders. He hinted that he would consider the England manager’s job in the future but is focused on his current role. “I’ve come to Coventry and I’m really enjoying my work,” he said. “I want to lay down some good work, if I can, to improve the squad.”
Off the pitch, Lampard is promoting the British Heart Foundation’s Every Minute Matters campaign, which encourages people to learn CPR through a 15-minute online course. He stressed the importance of the skill, saying: “It only takes 15 minutes to learn CPR and you could save someone’s life.”
