MasterChef 2026 Return Date Officially Confirmed by BBC
The BBC has officially announced the return date for the much-anticipated 22nd series of MasterChef UK, with fans set to welcome the show back to screens in April 2026. The beloved cooking competition will premiere on BBC One on Tuesday 21 April at 9:00pm, marking a significant new chapter for the long-running programme.
New Judges Grace Dent and Anna Haugh Take Over
This series will introduce Grace Dent, 52, and Anna Haugh, 45, as the new permanent judges, replacing former hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode. The pair were sacked in July 2025 following separate misconduct allegations. Wallace faced allegations relating to his conduct during the series, while Torode was dismissed over allegations involving the use of racial slurs.
The BBC's synopsis for the new series states: 'Into the kitchen and under the spotlight. Amateur cooks duel it out for the right to be called the MasterChef UK Champion.' Dent and Haugh were selected over other notable contenders including Monica Galetti and Marcus Wareing, with a television source noting their 'brilliant chemistry' and the historic shift to female-led judging.
Broadcast Schedule and Series Changes
The premiere episode will air on 21 April, followed by episode two on Wednesday 22 April and the third instalment on Thursday 23 April. In a departure from the usual format, the 22nd series will consist of 21 episodes instead of the traditional 22, a reduction that may surprise loyal viewers.
This scheduling follows a controversial period for the show. The 21st series, which aired in August 2025, saw a significant drop in viewership, attracting just 1.96 million viewers for its first episode compared to 2.73 million the previous year. The BBC faced criticism for airing that series after the hosts' dismissals, with many viewers describing the decision as 'tone deaf' and 'bizarre'.
Historical Context and Future Prospects
MasterChef has been a staple of British television since its debut in 1990, running until 2001 before being revived in 2005. The upcoming series represents the first major overhaul in its judging panel since Wallace and Torode began their tenure in 2005. Grace Dent previously appeared as a presenter on Celebrity MasterChef alongside Torode in November 2025, prior to his dismissal.
The BBC's decision to proceed with the new series under fresh leadership comes amid efforts to revitalise the programme after recent controversies. With Dent and Haugh at the helm, the broadcaster aims to restore viewer confidence and deliver the high-quality culinary competition that fans have come to expect over more than three decades on air.
