Hollywood icon Jodie Foster found herself in a deeply awkward situation this week during a live television interview, after making a significant on-air blunder that left the host visibly unimpressed.
A Promotional Interview Goes Awry
The 63-year-old actress appeared on NBC's Today show on Tuesday morning to discuss her forthcoming cinematic project, the French-language thriller A Private Life. The film, scheduled for release on January 16, features Foster in a career-first leading role performed entirely in French, portraying a psychiatrist investigating a patient's mysterious death.
Host Craig Melvin, aware of the linguistic demands of the role, prompted the Taxi Driver star to showcase her fluency. Foster explained her background, stating, "My mom put me in a French school when I was nine so I did everything in French - science, math, history, all that stuff."
The Moment of Live Television Embarrassment
The atmosphere turned palpably awkward when Melvin asked for a quick lesson in how to say "This is Today on NBC" in French. During the exchange, Foster inadvertently substituted "CBS" for "NBC," naming one of her host network's primary competitors.
"No! Not CBS. NBC! Jodi!" an exasperated Melvin immediately corrected her. A flustered Foster attempted to deflect with, "Well, I don't know... It's the same letter [length]," to which Melvin retorted, "That's a different network, Jodie! It was going so well."
Realising the gaffe was broadcast live and uncuttable, Foster covered her face in embarrassment, offering a sincere apology to the host.
Fresh-Faced Appearance Sparks Surprise
The on-air incident follows recent attention focused on Foster's remarkably youthful appearance at September's Toronto International Film Festival, where her glowing, wrinkle-free complexion stunned observers.
Plastic surgeons, commenting exclusively to the Daily Mail, analysed her look. Dr. David Pincus of New York's Pincus Plastic Surgery noted, "It doesn't seem like Jodie Foster has done much, and it's very hard to tell if she's had any work done at all." He did, however, observe slightly fuller cheeks, potentially the result of subtle filler to restore volume lost with age.
Echoing this assessment, Beverly Hills-based Dr. John Diaz stated he saw no evidence of surgical intervention, pointing to natural lines and skin laxity as indicators she has not gone under the knife. Both experts suggested any enhancements were likely minimal and conservative, preserving her natural facial character.
