ITV Confirms Monday Night Schedule Change as I'm A Celebrity Final Nears
As the highly anticipated live finale of I'm A Celebrity... South Africa approaches on Friday, April 24, ITV has officially announced its replacement programme for the coveted Monday night timeslot. The reality competition, which has been airing every weeknight for several weeks, will see its contestants reduced to just two finalists who will compete to be crowned King or Queen of the Jungle during the special broadcast.
New Espionage Drama Takes Over Prime Time Slot
Beginning Monday, April 27, ITV will premiere the "thrilling espionage drama" Secret Service at 9pm. The five-part series promises to deliver gripping television that viewers won't want to miss, according to network executives. The drama represents a significant shift in programming from reality television to scripted content as spring schedules transition.
Star-Studded Cast and Compelling Plot
Secret Service features an impressive ensemble cast led by Quantum of Solace star Gemma Artherton, who plays civil servant Kate. On the surface, Kate appears to live an ordinary life as a mother of two teenagers, but her true occupation is far more intriguing—she heads the Russia Desk at the Secret Intelligence Service.
The official synopsis reveals that when Kate discovers concerning evidence, she embarks on a "desperate race" to uncover the truth while navigating the dangerous world of espionage and attempting to maintain her family life. The series promises unexpected twists and compelling storytelling that will keep audiences engaged across all five episodes.
Creative Team Behind the Production
The drama is an adaptation of ITV News presenter Tom Bradby's novel of the same name, with Bradby co-writing the screenplay alongside Jemma Kennedy. The directing team includes Gangs of London's Farren Blackburn, who helmed some of the later episodes, while James Marsh served as director for the series.
Marsh told Digital Spy: "I hope we've made something that's good enough to keep watching across five episodes. The story is pretty arresting. And once you get into the story, there are very many surprises. It has twists in it that are quite unexpected."
Supporting Cast Adds Depth to Series
Alongside Artherton, the drama features several notable British actors including Rafe Spall from Under Salt Marsh, Doctor Who veteran Alex Kingston, Happy Valley and Game of Thrones star Mark Stanley, and Roger Allam of Endeavour fame. This talented ensemble brings considerable experience and depth to the production, promising high-quality performances throughout the series.
Audience Expectations and Programming Strategy
The transition from I'm A Celebrity... South Africa to Secret Service represents ITV's strategic programming move as the reality show concludes its latest iteration. While fans have eagerly followed the celebrity contestants through their jungle challenges, the network is now offering viewers a completely different genre of entertainment with this political thriller.
Marsh emphasized the series' appeal, stating: "You want to give people something that they're going to stick with and find compelling to watch. But the story contains lots of ideas, too..." This suggests the drama aims to provide both entertainment and intellectual engagement for its audience.
Secret Service premieres on Monday, April 27, at 9pm on ITV, immediately following the conclusion of I'm A Celebrity... South Africa's live finale on April 24. The scheduling ensures a smooth transition between two very different but highly anticipated television events on the network's prime time lineup.
