Prince William's Pasty-Making Struggles Highlight Royal Visit to Cornwall

The Prince of Wales found himself missing his wife's culinary expertise during a lighthearted visit to a Cornish pasty shop in Helston yesterday. William, undertaking engagements to mark St Piran's Day, Cornwall's national day, joined staff at Gear Farm Pasty Company in their kitchen, where his attempts at pastry crimping proved particularly challenging.

A Royal Kitchen Assistant

Known as the Duke of Cornwall in the West of England, the 43-year-old future King gamely participated in pasty-making activities. In a video shared on social media platform X, William could be seen carefully following an employee's demonstration of how to pinch pastry around beef and potato filling before sealing the edges.

'It's a lot harder than it looks!' William exclaimed during the session, later adding with a laugh: 'Feels like I might be taking this one home, guys.' Despite encouragement from bakery staff, the Prince acknowledged his limitations, stating: 'This is not my finest hour' and humorously noting: 'This is where I need my wife.'

William specifically mentioned that the Princess of Wales 'would be all over this,' referencing Kate's known culinary interests. His finished creation resembled what he described as 'a funny little crab,' leading him to quip: 'Not sure this is going to be sellable.'

Unexpected Royal Customer Service

The royal visit included an unexpected customer service role when William answered the shop telephone and took an order for fifteen pasties. The caller, regular customer Josie Trounson who lives twenty minutes from the farm, initially found the person on the line 'a bit incoherent' as William struggled to understand her name.

'Juicy?' the Prince repeated back to her, looking puzzled according to video footage. After clarification, William responded: 'The pasties will be juicy, you're right.' Trounson later expressed being 'flabbergasted' upon discovering the royal had taken her order, admitting: 'It's St Piran's Day, and I was really worried I wasn't going to get my pasties.'

The bakery team presented her with the fifteen pasties free of charge as appreciation for her good-natured response. A source revealed: 'She said she'll be telling this story for years.'

Separate Royal Engagements

William and Kate carried out independent engagements yesterday, with the future Queen traveling to Leicester to participate in Holi celebrations, the Hindu festival of colour. This separation prompted William's affectionate remarks about missing his wife's kitchen skills during his Cornish visit.

Community Resilience After Storm Goretti

William's St Piran's Day activities extended beyond the bakery to Helston community fire station, where he met with emergency service personnel. The Prince learned about local recovery efforts following Storm Goretti on January 8, one of Cornwall's most severe recent weather events.

The storm brought winds reaching 123 mph, leaving approximately 50,000 homes without power and 15,000 without water. Major highways and rural routes became impassable due to thousands of fallen trees, with emergency services and volunteers working continuously to clear debris and restore essential services.

Tragically, one Helston resident died when a tree fell onto his caravan during the evening. Firefighters described to William their struggle to remove the twenty-tonne tree from the caravan, with one stating: 'We did everything we could, but we couldn't safely get to him.' The operation eventually required twelve firefighters and three tree surgeons working the following day.

William commended their efforts, telling the crews: 'Well done guys, good job and hopefully spring is here now.' Cornwall Fire Service Chief Fire Officer Katherine Billing responded: 'Then it's wildfire season, and you'll be back again!'

The Prince brought a large box of warm pasties from Gear Farm to share with emergency personnel, fulfilling the bakery's earlier intention during Storm Goretti when road blockages had prevented delivery.
