Queen Camilla and James Middleton Share Warm Embrace at Dog Charity Reception
Queen Camilla and James Middleton Embrace at Dog Charity Event

Queen Camilla and James Middleton, the brother of the Princess of Wales, shared a warm embrace, exchanging a kiss and a hug during a reception at Clarence House honouring life-saving dogs. The event, hosted by Camilla as patron of the Medical Detection Dogs charity, highlighted the incredible work of canines trained to detect diseases such as cancer and other life-threatening conditions.

A Royal Bond Over Dogs

James Middleton, a well-known dog breeder and owner of the dog food company Ella & Co, was among the guests. Camilla praised his support, saying, “It’s lovely that you are supporting them, you are doing some feed for them, aren’t you?” Middleton replied, “Yes, treats. I’m really fortunate to be involved. I’m mind-blown by what they do. It’s incredible. We can learn from dogs as much as they learn from us.”

Dismissing the Sceptics

During her speech, Camilla addressed sceptics of the charity’s work, stating that “nature will always lead the way.” She highlighted the transformative power of the dogs, noting that many sceptics have become converts after witnessing the demonstrations.

Life-Changing Assistance Dogs

Among the guests was Lucy, 39, from Bristol, who relies on her Medical Alert Assistance Dog, Wolfie, a black Labrador. Wolfie alerts her to oncoming episodes of Postural Tachycardia Syndrome (PoTS), a heart condition causing fainting and fatigue. Lucy, also a breast cancer survivor, told Camilla that Wolfie “changed my life.” Camilla agreed, saying, “They are extraordinary the way they change your life.” Lucy later described the meeting as her “pinch-me moment.”

Demonstration of Canine Detection

Camilla watched a demonstration by golden Labrador Jodie, part of a new team trained to sniff out bowel cancer. Jodie successfully identified two urine samples from a person with cancer out of five samples. The Queen also met Florin, an original prostate screening dog, and observed the charity’s new “electronic nose” project, a collaboration with RealNose.AI to replicate canine diagnostic accuracy using technology.

Medical Professional’s Conversion

Consultant oncologist Alan Makepeace, an advisor to the charity, admitted he was initially a sceptic. “The old adage seeing is believing is very powerful. As a consultant oncologist I was a sceptic. Shame on me,” he said. He praised the development of AI technology to mimic the dogs’ abilities, calling it an “exciting development” with limitless possibilities.

Camilla has been patron of Medical Detection Dogs since 2014. The charity trains Bio Detection Dogs to sniff out conditions like cancer, Parkinson’s, COVID-19, and malaria, as well as Medical Alert Assistance Dogs that support individuals with complex health conditions, preventing hospital admissions.
