James Maddison has described Tottenham Hotspur's season as 'embarrassing' after their defeat to Chelsea left their Premier League survival hanging by a thread. Goals from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos secured a 2-1 win for the Blues at Stamford Bridge, with Richarlison's late strike proving only a consolation.
The result leaves Spurs 17th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone with only one match remaining. A victory over Chelsea would have confirmed their top-flight status, while a draw would have made survival almost certain. Instead, they now face a final-day showdown against Everton at home, needing to avoid defeat to guarantee safety.
Maddison, who came close to an equaliser late on but was denied by a Jorrel Hato block, did not hold back in his assessment. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: 'We have to give everything for the club, for the badge, for the fans. It's a bit embarrassing that we're in this position.'
'We're going to need our fans, who were unbelievable tonight. I think we have the best away following in the league. We knew any sort of result would be very beneficial for us in the battle. It wasn't to be. We pushed hard in the last 20 minutes. It was probably a pretty even game. I don't remember them having many chances.'
The midfielder only returned to action in April after a lengthy absence recovering from ACL surgery. He admitted he still feels not at his best but is determined to play his part on Sunday. 'I've been out for a long time, so I'm not going to be at my fluid best. I've had a massive injury and you have to respect the injury a bit. I'm going to do what I can on Sunday.'
Tottenham's final match at home to Everton will now decide their fate, with a draw or win securing survival, while defeat could see them relegated if other results go against them.
