Amy Dowden has announced she will undergo a second mastectomy this week, but has confirmed she will return to Strictly Come Dancing in 2025. The Welsh dancer, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023, shared the news in an emotional Instagram post on Monday.
Dowden, 34, returned to the BBC show this year and was partnered with Thomas Skinner. Although eliminated in the first week, she continued to appear in professional dance routines. However, she will now step away from the 2024 series to focus on her recovery.
In her statement, Dowden emphasised that the surgery is not due to a new cancer diagnosis. She wrote: 'Following a recent appointment with my incredible medical team, we've decided that I'll be having another mastectomy this week. They're confident that, all going well, I can expect a straightforward recovery. Once I have healed, I look forward to rejoining my Strictly family.'
The dancer received an outpouring of support from fellow contestants and fans. Karen Carney, a contestant on this year's show, wrote: 'Sending so much love.' Tom Fletcher added: 'All the love to you, my wonderful friend.' Her partner Thomas Skinner posted: 'Love ya, Amy. Hope it all goes well. You are a legend.'
Dowden concluded her message by saying: 'Of course, I'm going to miss not being there so much, but I will be watching from home and look forward to cheering everyone on.' She confirmed she will return to Strictly Come Dancing in 2025.
