Tehran Creator Dana Eden Found Dead in Athens Hotel During Filming
Dana Eden, the acclaimed Israeli creator and producer behind the award-winning spy drama Tehran, has been found dead in a Greek hotel while filming the show's new season. The 52-year-old was discovered by her brother in her Athens hotel room after she failed to respond to his messages.
Police Investigation and Autopsy Underway
Local police in Athens are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding her sudden death, with an autopsy expected to be conducted. While Greek news outlets report there is currently no indication of foul play, authorities are collecting security camera footage and testimony from hotel staff as part of their standard procedures.
Production Company Issues Statement Dispelling Rumors
Dana & Shula Productions, the company Mrs Eden co-owned, shared a tribute expressing profound shock and sadness at her untimely passing. The statement described her as 'a gifted creator with an international reputation' and explicitly addressed online speculation.
The company stated clearly: 'The production company wants to make it clear that the rumors of the death being criminal or nationalistic are not true and baseless. We call on the media and the public not to publish unfounded theories and to act with responsibility and sensitivity.'
They emphasized this is 'a moment of immense pain for the family, friends, and colleagues' and requested privacy to preserve Mrs Eden's dignity.
Emmy-Winning Series and Production Legacy
Tehran, which follows a young Mossad agent infiltrating Iran's nuclear program under a false identity, won an Emmy Award in 2021 for best drama series. The show featured notable actors including Glenn Close and Hugh Laurie in recent seasons.
The production was filming its fourth season in Greece, with Athens standing in for Tehran due to visual similarities and the ban on Israelis visiting Iran. The third season had just aired on Apple TV Plus last month.
Industry Tributes and Production Continuation
The Israel Broadcasting Corporation paid tribute, noting Mrs Eden was 'among the senior figures in the Israeli television industry' and played a central role in creating some of their most prominent productions. They confirmed the fourth season appears set to continue filming despite her death.
Mrs Eden and her production partner Shula Spiegel had an extensive career spanning more than 40 television series, including:
- Five Men and a Wedding
- Dan & Muzly
- The Magpie
- The Stylist
- CBS pilot Mother's Day
- Children's series Shakshouka
- Documentary series Saving the Wild Animals
Her body was found at the Gatsby Hotel in Athens, located near the Acropolis, according to Reuters. The production company's statement concluded by sharing in the mourning of her family and embracing her partner Shula Spiegel.
