A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an alleged attack on a woman near a busy city centre street in Worcester.
Incident Details
Police responded to a report that a woman was raped in an alleyway off The Tything in Worcester, West Midlands. Detectives believe the alleged incident occurred between 6am and 8.30am on Saturday morning.
Arrest and Custody
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of rape and remained in police custody on Sunday afternoon. West Mercia Police said it will increase officer patrols around the area, acknowledging that the incident will 'bring great concern to the community'.
A force spokesperson said: 'An investigation has been launched following a report that a woman was raped in Worcester yesterday morning. It is believed the incident happened between 6am and 8.30am in an alleyway on The Tything. A 23-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rape. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.'
Police Appeal
Police are now appealing for information that could assist with the investigation. Detective Inspector Lisa Tibbits said: 'I know an incident like this will bring great concern to the community. I would like to reassure the public that a thorough investigation is now ongoing. I am appealing to anybody who may have any information that would help with our enquiries, however insignificant you feel it may be, to please contact the police. As part of our investigation we have a man in custody, who is helping us with enquiries. There will be an increased police presence in the area as we carry out enquiries and specially trained officers are supporting the victim.'
