Zach Braff Details Ego-Crushing Vegas Nightclub Encounter with Michael Fassbender

Zach Braff has shared a painfully awkward story about a recent encounter in a Las Vegas nightclub where Michael Fassbender mistakenly identified him as actor Dax Shepard. The Scrubs star, 50, recounted the disheartening tale on Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert podcast, describing it as a moment that made his heart sink.

The Initial Praise That Quickly Turned Cringe

Braff explained that Fassbender approached him enthusiastically, grabbing him by the shoulders. "I was grabbed by the shoulders by Michael Fassbender," Braff said. Before he could speak, the Oscar-nominated actor from 12 Years a Slave lavished him with praise. "He said, 'I love you. I love your work. I love everything that you do... The s*** you make is f***ing awesome. I wish we could work together,'" Braff recalled.

Initially, this left Braff feeling confident and proud, especially as his Scrubs co-star Donald Faison watched the interaction. "My ego is like here," Braff noted. However, the situation quickly deteriorated when Fassbender referenced the 2017 comedy-action film CHiPs, which was directed by and starred Dax Shepard.

The Moment of Realization and Embarrassment

"And then he goes, 'I mean, f***ing CHiPs, dude,'" Braff continued. "I just felt my heart sink because now, not only is it about Dax, but I don't know how to get out of this encounter. It's so cringe." Faison immediately stepped in to correct the mistake, telling Fassbender, "No, man, this is Zach Braff."

Braff described Fassbender's reaction as visibly embarrassed, with his face dropping before he began to back away. "He starts to kind of back away like, 'Oh man, you guys have the best night!'" Braff said. Faison, acting as a supportive wingman, insisted Fassbender stay, listing Braff's notable credits including Scrubs, Garden State, A Good Person, and The Last Kiss.

The Aftermath and Recent Scrubs Revival

Despite Faison's efforts, Braff felt the encounter was beyond saving. "He's just nodding and nodding, and then I'm like, Donald, let's set him free, please. He backed away and that was it. I didn't even make it out of the club. I was so embarrassed," Braff admitted.

This story comes on the heels of Braff and Faison's recent reunion in the Scrubs reboot, which premiered last month after a 16-year hiatus. The revival features much of the original cast, including Sarah Chalke, John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes, Christa Miller, and Robert Maschio, along with fan-favorite recurring guest star Phill Lewis.

While some critics noted the reboot doesn't advance the plot significantly, The Independent's Annabel Nugent praised it for maintaining the show's original charm. She wrote that creator Bill Lawrence avoided turning it into a sentimental love-fest, instead keeping the Scrubs reboot "sealed off from the algorithmic sprawl of modern TV and beating to the same earnest, goofy heart."
