Trey Songz charged with assault in New York nightclub incident

R&B star Trey Songz has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and aggravated harassment following an alleged physical confrontation with an employee at a popular Times Square nightclub.

The Incident at Dramma Nightclub

According to prosecutors in a Manhattan criminal court, the incident unfolded in the early hours of 4 December. The singer, whose legal name is Tremaine Aldon Neverson, was reportedly partying at the Dramma nightclub when a staff member informed him and his group that the venue was closing just after 4 a.m.

Prosecutors allege that this prompted the 41-year-old 'Na Na' singer to become 'needlessly irate'. It is claimed he then punched the club worker in the face. The employee, who prosecutors noted is familiar with Neverson as a regular patron, has since been granted an order of protection against him.

Legal Proceedings and Defence Statement

Neverson was arraigned on Sunday, 15 December 2025, and entered a plea of not guilty. He was released on his own recognizance and is scheduled to return to court on 18 February.

In a separate but related charge, the artist also faces an accusation of criminal mischief for allegedly causing approximately $1,500 in damage at a Manhattan restaurant and hookah lounge.

His attorney, Mitchell Schuster, provided a statement to the press offering a different account. Schuster claimed the nightclub incident began when Neverson was 'confronted by individuals who instigated a confrontation and attempted to surround him.'

'His security intervened to protect him and contain the situation, and an altercation occurred in the ensuing confusion,' Schuster stated. 'Despite being the target of the initial provocation, Trey was arrested.'

The lawyer went further, suggesting a pattern of unfair treatment, saying: 'Public figures are often treated as targets for instigation in pursuit of headlines or financial gain.' He confirmed his client is cooperating fully and expressed confidence that the full context would emerge.

History of Legal Troubles

This is not the first time the singer has faced serious legal allegations. His previous encounters with the law include:

  • 2016: Arrested in Detroit after a concert and charged with felony assault of a police officer and misdemeanor aggravated assault for injuring a photographer. He later pleaded guilty to reduced counts of disturbing the peace and received an 18-month probation sentence, along with mandatory substance screening and anger management classes.
  • 2020-2022: Three separate women accused Neverson of sexual assault, all of which he has denied. Earlier this year, he reached a confidential settlement with one accuser who alleged an assault at a Miami nightclub on New Year's Eve in 2018.

The latest charges add another chapter to the singer's complex legal history, raising questions about the intersection of celebrity status and personal conduct.
