Kobbie Mainoo celebrated his new contract in spectacular fashion as the Manchester United academy graduate scored the decisive goal in a thrilling 3-2 victory over arch-rivals Liverpool, securing Champions League qualification for his side.
Fast Start for United
Sunday's highly anticipated Premier League clash at Old Trafford saw third-placed United take on fourth-placed Liverpool. The Red Devils burst out of the blocks, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko both finding the net within the opening 14 minutes to establish a commanding early lead.
Liverpool Fightback
However, Arne Slot's struggling side were handed a lifeline just after half-time. A misplaced pass from substitute Amad Diallo was punished by Dominik Szoboszlai, who pulled one back for Liverpool. The visitors then levelled the scores when Cody Gakpo capitalised on a mistake by United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The match continued at a frenetic pace, with both teams pushing for a winner. It was United's homegrown talent Mainoo who settled the contest in the 77th minute, slamming the ball home in front of the Stretford End just days after committing his future to the club until 2031.
Historic Double and Champions League Spot
The victory ensured United completed the league double over Liverpool for the first time since the 2015-16 season. More importantly, it secured Champions League football with three games to spare, further strengthening interim boss Michael Carrick's case for the long-term managerial role.
