Comedian and musician Tim Minchin has opened up about the 'gutting' death of his mother Ros, who died in 2023 after a three-year battle with blood cancer. The 50-year-old star, who performed in Sydney just hours after her death, said the hardest part is knowing she will never see her grandchildren grow up.
Speaking about his loss, Minchin said: 'I'm a deeply pragmatic person... your mum dies, and that's like one of the rules. If you're lucky, she goes before you. But sometimes I feel like she's missing all of this, as she would have loved to see her grandkids getting older.'
The Australian entertainer, who rose to fame with his award-winning Edinburgh show Darkside, is marking 20 years in the spotlight with a new album, TimMinchinTimeMachine. He lives in Sydney with his wife Sarah and their two teenage children, Violet and Caspar, when not touring.
Minchin also revealed he avoids social media and 24-hour news to protect his mental health, saying he became addicted to Twitter before quitting 'cold turkey' after Brexit and Trump. He now checks the news every three days to avoid 'doomscrolling' and refuses to read reviews of his shows, admitting: 'I'm just too fragile.'
The creator of the hit musical Matilda, which celebrates 15 years of West End success in 2025, said he stays close to his family, including his father David, by reporting their daily exercise to each other.
