Former reality television star and current Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt is set to release a tell-all memoir, promising a candid look at his numerous brushes with fame over the years. The book, titled 'The Guy You Loved to Hate: Confessions from a Reality TV Villain', will be available from January 27.
University Days and A-List Encounters
Pratt, 42, details a decade-long journey to complete his political science degree at the University of Southern California between 2003 and 2013. During this period, he lived in a penthouse loft that connected to the residence of a then-upcoming actor, Ryan Gosling. Pratt claims they used to 'hang out a lot' and that Gosling was part of his social circle. 'I had a crew that he was a part of,' Pratt writes. 'We were a crew, and I think he learned a lot for his future roles from my posse.'
However, the dynamic apparently shifted after Pratt's rise to notoriety on MTV's The Hills. He recounts a later encounter with the now three-time Oscar nominee at The Standard Hotel, claiming, 'I swear to God, he ran when he saw me.'
School Scandals and Tabloid Tactics
Pratt's history with celebrities stretches back to his school years. He attended Santa Monica's Crossroads School in 2002 alongside Mary-Kate Olsen, co-founder of fashion label The Row. Olsen briefly dated Pratt's friend, Max Winkler. In a controversial move, a 20-year-old Pratt later sold photographs of Olsen and Winkler to a tabloid for $50,000, an act he describes as turning his 'buddy's romantic misery into startup capital.'
Unsurprisingly, this did not endear him to the former child star. Mary-Kate Olsen stated on the Late Show with David Letterman in 2008 that she was not friends with Pratt, criticising his temper and recalling how he would storm out of football matches.
Reality TV Regrets and Celebrity Support
The memoir delves deeper into pivotal moments in pop culture history. Pratt reveals that Kris Jenner once pitched him the concept for a reality show that would eventually become the global phenomenon Keeping Up with the Kardashians. He admits to declining the offer 'with the kind of confidence only available to people about to make the worst decisions of their lives.'
He also shares moments of unexpected support. After losing his $3.8 million Malibu home in a wildfire last year, the first person to send him a lengthy direct message was Scott Disick. More recently, an unnamed A-list movie star approached him at a restaurant to offer encouragement for his public candour, despite not following him on social media.
Pratt even expresses hope for an invitation to pop superstar Taylor Swift's wedding to Travis Kelce, noting he landed on her PR mailing list in 2018 after posting videos dancing to her song Look What You Made Me Do.
The 304-page book also features anecdotes about other figures like David Foster, Nicole Richie, and James Franco, who has reportedly expressed interest in adapting the memoir into a film. Pratt is married to Heidi Montag Pratt, with whom he shares two sons, and first found fame on the often-scripted MTV series The Hills. He will promote the book with tour stops in Ridgewood, New Jersey on January 27 and Los Angeles on January 30.
