Former Premier League footballer Paul Gallagher has made his first court appearance after being charged with drink driving following a traffic stop on a major motorway.
The 39-year-old ex-Manchester City and Preston North End midfielder attended Bolton Magistrates' Court on Tuesday morning. The case stems from an incident on the evening of April 10th, when Gallagher's black BMW was stopped by police on the M62 motorway.
Gallagher, of Heath Charnock, Chorley, stands formally accused of driving a motor vehicle with an alcohol level above the legal limit.
Football Career and Current Role
Following a distinguished playing career that included stints at clubs like Manchester City, Preston North End, Leicester City, and Stoke City, Gallagher had transitioned into a coaching role. He most recently served as a first-team coach at Preston North End, a position he left in December 2023.
His departure from the Championship club came as part of a backroom staff reshuffle when manager Ryan Lowe opted to bring in new coaching personnel.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
The case against the retired footballer could not proceed to a full hearing during this initial appearance. Instead, the matter was adjourned by the magistrates.
A provisional trial date has been set for July 10th at the same court. Gallagher was released on unconditional bail until that date, where the evidence will be presented and the charge will be formally put to him.
A conviction for drink driving typically results in a mandatory driving ban of at least 12 months, alongside a potentially unlimited fine and other penalties.
