Emmerdale star Ash Palmisciano has delighted his followers by offering a rare and intimate look at his off-screen romance, sharing a cosy Polaroid snapshot with his long-term girlfriend, Shea Rowan.
A Glimpse Into a Private Romance
The actor, best known for his groundbreaking role as Matty Barton on the ITV soap, reshared the affectionate photo on his Instagram Story. The image captures the couple looking genuinely smitten, providing a sweet contrast to the often dramatic storylines his character endures in the fictional Yorkshire village.
Ash, 36, and Shea made their relationship Instagram official back on New Year's Eve as they welcomed in 2022 together. Despite being together for several years, the actor typically keeps his personal life away from the public eye, making this shared moment particularly special for fans.
From Soap Drama to Real-Life Support
Ash Palmisciano made television history when he joined Emmerdale in 2018, becoming the show's first ever transgender actor. His character, the son of soap stalwart Moira Barton (played by Natalie J. Robb), has been central to major plots, including undergoing top surgery, a prison stint, and a heartfelt marriage to Amy (Natalie Ann Jamieson), who was tragically killed off last year.
Away from the cameras, Ash has openly credited Shea for her unwavering support throughout his career. In a 2024 interview with OK! magazine, he gushed, “She’s really proud, and I’m very lucky to have her. She’s very level-headed and chilled-out.” He did, however, joke that Shea was “a bit annoyed that I got married in the show,” but added that she helps him learn his lines and was a great support during the wedding storyline.
The couple are also good friends with his on-screen wife, Natalie Ann Jamieson, and her partner, often socialising together as they live close by.
Navigating Personal Triumph and Tragedy
The actor's personal life has seen its own profound challenges. In 2022, Ash suffered the devastating loss of his beloved mother, who passed away at age 60 due to reported complications from long-term rheumatoid arthritis. He told The Mirror at the time, “Mum was the most important person in my life.”
In the midst of this grief, Ash found solace in his relationship, expressing gratitude that Shea had the chance to meet his mother before she died. “I’m glad Mum got to meet her a few times before she died,” he revealed. Reflecting on the strength of their bond, he added, “We’ve been through a lot in a short space of time. I believe lockdown taught us all that you know straight away if something’s meant to be.”
Emmerdale continues to air weeknights at 8:00pm on ITV1 and the ITVX streaming service.
