The award-winning revival of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita, starring Rachel Zegler, will transfer to Broadway in spring 2027. The production, which enjoyed a critically acclaimed run at the London Palladium, earned Zegler an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Eva Perón.
Directed by Jamie Lloyd, who previously won a Tony for Sunset Boulevard, the revival will feature a revised staging tailored for New York. Zegler expressed her excitement in a statement, calling the opportunity “a once in a lifetime” chance to perform in her home city. Evita marks her second Broadway appearance following Romeo + Juliet in 2024.
Lloyd confirmed that the iconic balcony scene from the London production—where Zegler sang “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina” to passersby—will not be replicated in New York due to safety concerns. “We can’t do that in New York. Something awful could happen. We have gun laws in Britain,” he told reporters.
The Guardian’s Arifa Akbar gave the London staging three stars, praising Zegler’s “phenomenal” performance but criticising the show’s bombast. The original production last appeared on Broadway in 2012 with Elena Roger and Ricky Martin.
Evita will join other announced 2027 Broadway shows including The Full Monty, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and David Hare’s Montauk starring Laura Linney.
