Sir David Beckham's Lonely LA Night After Near-Miss with Estranged Son Brooklyn
Sir David Beckham appeared deep in thought as he sat alone under the fluorescent lights of a late-night sandwich shop in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The 50-year-old football icon had just experienced two near-misses with his estranged son, Brooklyn, marking the closest they have come to meeting since their rift began last May.
A Heartbreaking Proximity
Sir David, who is in LA filming an advertisement for Lays crisps, the sponsor of the forthcoming World Cup, checked into a five-star hotel late on Sunday night after arriving from a skiing trip in British Columbia with his middle son, Romeo, 23. On Monday morning, he had an early start to travel five miles to Santa Monica for the filming location.
A few hours later, Brooklyn, 27, arrived at the same hotel to have breakfast and relax by the pool, having partied into the early hours at his godfather Sir Elton John’s Oscars party with his wife, Nicola Peltz. Sir David returned to dine with friends at the world-famous Polo Lounge restaurant at 6pm, just three hours after his son was last seen at the hotel by an onlooker.
The Emotional Toll
A source told the Daily Mail: "While David didn't know where Brooklyn was, he knew he was in the same city so of course it was sad. So much of Brooklyn's childhood was spent in LA, it was a happy time for the Beckhams. Now David is there without his son."
Sir David, wearing a simple white t-shirt, dined solo at Fat Sal’s, a restaurant not far from Brooklyn's £12 million mansion in Beverly Hills, which he shares with Nicola Peltz. Friends of the Beckhams say that Sir David "had no idea" that Brooklyn had been at the hotel when he arrived on either occasion.
The Ongoing Family Rift
Sir David and his son have not spoken since last May, when Brooklyn and Nicola snubbed his 50th birthday celebrations. The couple's lawyers wrote to the Beckhams' legal team demanding that they only converse through them. Shortly before Christmas, Brooklyn blocked his parents on Instagram.
In January, he posted a brutal, bombshell six-page letter on the social media platform, claiming that Sir David and Victoria controlled him for most of his life, tried to split him and Nicola up, and left him embarrassed when his mother danced "inappropriately" with him during his first dance at his wedding. Victoria Beckham denies her son's allegations.
The former England captain appeared forlorn as he drove his Rolls Royce around the city, reflecting the emotional weight of the ongoing estrangement. This series of near-misses in Los Angeles underscores the painful distance between father and son, with both living in close proximity yet worlds apart emotionally.
