Olympic swimmer Adam Peaty has been labelled 'hypocritical' by his former partner following his decision to adopt a double-barrelled surname with his new wife, Holly Ramsay. The criticism comes amidst ongoing family tensions that overshadowed the couple's lavish wedding.
Ex-partner's 'bit rich' claim over surname switch
The gold medallist and television chef's daughter, who tied the knot in a star-studded ceremony at Bath Abbey, have officially become Adam and Holly Peaty-Ramsay. They have already updated their social media profiles to reflect the new shared name.
However, Eiri Munroe, the mother of Peaty's five-year-old son, George, has reportedly taken issue with the move. Speaking to The Sun, a friend of Eiri's stated she finds it 'a bit rich' that Peaty was quick to change his own name but did not afford her the same right regarding their son's surname.
'It appears Adam is being a bit hypocritical,' the friend claimed. Despite this pointed criticism, the friend was keen to add that Eiri remains proud to have seen her son stand by his father's side on the wedding day and praised Holly's positive influence.
Mother's heartbreak and a damning text message
The name change is believed to be another point of contention with Peaty's mother, Caroline, who was notably absent from the wedding following a major family fallout. In emotional comments to the Daily Mail just before the ceremony, Caroline Peaty expressed her profound hurt.
'I don't think they understand how much they have hurt me; it's as if they have cut my heart out,' she said, describing this Christmas as the first without her family together. The rift was further highlighted when, on his wedding day, Peaty allegedly received a stern text message from his aunt.
The message read: 'I hope you never suffer the depth of pain you have put your mother through, and despite it all, she loves you still. Shame on you both.' A source close to the swimmer suggested the name change was always planned and not intended to cause upset, stating, 'His parents may be upset, but it’s not intentional.'
Moving forward amidst the drama
Despite the familial discord, the wedding proceeded with a glittering guest list including the Beckhams and Strictly Come Dancing star Sara Davies. The newlyweds have since been spotted jetting off on their honeymoon, where they plan to see in the New Year.
Eiri Munroe's friend concluded by acknowledging the complexities, saying, 'Although she says Adam has double standards over changing his name, she can’t fault him as a dad.' They also emphasised that Eiri considers George fortunate to have a stepmother like Holly.
