Babysitter's Sin-Cleansing Attack Shocks Pennsylvania Community
In a disturbing incident that has left a Pennsylvania community reeling, a babysitter allegedly attempted to murder a mother and her two young children by drowning, claiming she needed to 'wash away the boy's sins'. The attack, which occurred last Friday in a Fayette County apartment, has raised serious questions about mental health evaluations in criminal cases.
Violent Confrontation During Childcare
According to police reports obtained by WTAE, Karen Garcia had left her two sons, aged 5 and 11, in the care of 40-year-old Vira Zabudko, a Ukrainian national, while she moved belongings. Upon returning, Garcia discovered Zabudko attempting to throw the 5-year-old from a third-story window, prompting a physical altercation between the women.
During the struggle, Zabudko allegedly dragged the younger child to the apartment's bathtub and attempted to drown him. Police documents reveal that Zabudko later explained her actions by stating she had to 'wash the sins out because he is dirty'. She is also accused of forcing Garcia into a shower during the violent episode.
Escape and Arrest
Garcia and her children managed to break free from the attack and immediately contacted emergency services. When police arrived at the scene, they found all three victims soaking wet from the attempted drownings. Zabudko was promptly arrested and charged with aggravated assault and unlawful restraint causing serious bodily injury.
Shockingly, despite the severity of the allegations, Zabudko has since been released from custody after posting bond. She is not scheduled to reappear in court until April 9, leaving the victims and community concerned about her freedom pending trial.
Mental Health Considerations and Legal Proceedings
Fayette County District Attorney's office acknowledged the bizarre nature of the attack, stating: 'There appears to be a possible mental health incident to this. We'll investigate everything, including the possibility of getting a mental health evaluation.'
Prosecutors explained to WTAE that Zabudko was not charged with attempted homicide because the children's injuries were not deemed severe enough to warrant that more serious charge. This legal distinction has sparked debate about how violent crimes against children are classified and prosecuted.
Religious Imagery and Background
Investigators have uncovered troubling elements in Zabudko's background that may provide context for her alleged actions. Social media profiles indicate she originally hails from Kyiv, Ukraine, and frequently posts Bible passages to her accounts.
One particularly concerning excerpt she shared reads: 'If you don't punish your son, you don't love him. If you do love him, you will correct him.' Additionally, her Fayette County Jail booking photo reveals a '777' tattoo at the base of her neck—a number some associate with the Holy Trinity or symbolic perfection in certain religious interpretations.
This combination of violent behavior alongside religious justification has created a complex case that authorities continue to investigate thoroughly. The community remains on edge as they await further developments in this troubling assault case that nearly turned fatal for a young family.
