Atlanta Woman Dies in Puerto Rico Zip-Line Tragedy After Head Injury

A beloved Atlanta-area woman has died following what her family describes as a 'freak accident' during a Caribbean vacation. Tamirah Dix, 40, allegedly sustained a head injury at some point on Saturday while participating in a zip-lining adventure in Puerto Rico.

Seizures Overnight Lead to Fatal Outcome

According to her devastated family and loved ones who spoke to 11 Alive, Dix remained active throughout the rest of the day and appeared perfectly healthy before retiring to bed that evening. However, the situation took a dramatic and tragic turn overnight when she began experiencing severe seizures.

Dix was urgently rushed to hospital but tragically passed away during the journey. It remains unclear who may have been accompanying her at the time of the incident. The circumstances surrounding the accident are still under active investigation as the family anxiously awaits the results of an autopsy, as reported by WSBTV.

Remembering an Adventurous Spirit and Dedicated Student

The youngest of four siblings, Dix is being remembered by her family as an adventurous, caring, and fearless aunt who cherished her nieces and nephews above all else. She was visiting the mountainous town of Orocovis, approximately one hour outside of San Juan, when the accident occurred. This region is popular with tourists for activities including hiking, swimming, camping, and zip-line adventures.

Dix was a 2004 graduate of Marietta High School, where she performed with the dance team and formed a lifelong friendship with Brittani Hebron. 'I'm really crushed because that's my everyday person. I'm on the phone with her at work, I'm on the phone with her after work,' Hebron emotionally recounted, stating she had to pull over her car upon receiving the devastating news. She fondly remembered Dix as 'the life of the party.'

Academic Achievements and Community Impact

Professionally and academically, Dix was a dedicated student. Her LinkedIn profile indicated she was enrolled at Clayton State University, on track to graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Applied Science in May 2029. Less than a year before her untimely death, she had earned a degree in Health Information Management Technology from Georgia Piedmont Technical College.

The college posted a heartfelt tribute honouring her memory. 'Tamirah was a dedicated student leader who served as president of the Student Government Association and our SkillsUSA chapter and was our 2024–25 GOAL winner,' the statement read. 'She inspired those around her through her growth, determination and willingness to lead, making a meaningful and lasting impact on our college community. We are holding her family, friends and all who knew and loved her in our thoughts during this difficult time.'

Family Seeks Support for Repatriation and Funeral

In the wake of this tragedy, Dix's sister, Rashida Dix, has established a GoFundMe campaign seeking community support to bring her sister's body home from Puerto Rico and arrange a proper farewell. 'It is with heavy hearts that I share the passing of my beloved baby sister Tamirah,' she wrote. 'This loss has been devastating and we are now faced with the challenge of bringing her home and arranging a proper farewell. The costs of transportation to the state and funeral services are more than we can manage alone, so we are humbly asking for help from our community.'

The family has expressed deep gratitude for any contributions, and the campaign has already raised $8,000 towards its $12,000 goal. A vigil to celebrate Tamirah Dix's life is scheduled to be held on April 4 in their hometown of Marietta, Georgia.
