Robert Peston and Charlotte Edwardes End Their High-Profile Relationship
Television broadcaster and political editor Robert Peston is nursing a broken heart once again following the end of his relationship with fellow journalist Charlotte Edwardes. The couple, who had been together since 2017 and were considered one of London media's prominent power couples, have decided to go their separate ways.
A close friend of the pair revealed the development, stating: 'It's terribly sad but they just couldn't make it work any longer.' The split marks another chapter of personal heartbreak for Peston, who lost his first wife, novelist Sian Busby, to lung cancer in 2012 when she was just 51 years old.
A Romance That Blossomed From Professional Connection
The relationship between Peston, 65, and Edwardes, 50, began to develop after they met at a Christmas party in 2017. Both had previously worked at The Sunday Telegraph, providing a professional foundation for their personal connection. Peston later explained how the romance started, saying: 'I sort of made the first move by suggesting we have dinner. I was chronically embarrassed, I felt a bit like a teenager again.'
By 2018, the couple had moved in together, blending their families. Edwardes has three children from her previous marriage, while Peston has an adult son with his late wife Sian and a stepson from her first marriage.
Navigating Public Attention and Personal History
Peston had previously spoken about how Edwardes approached their relationship differently from other women he encountered after his wife's death. He noted: 'The interesting thing about Charlotte was that I'm absolutely confident that, of all the women I've encountered over the last few years, she is the one who's not remotely interested in me as a widower or because of what I do for a living.'
The broadcaster also revealed that he had experienced what he described as 'predatory' behavior from some women following his wife's passing. He explained: 'There is a stalky thing that happens and I think women [presenters] talk about it more than men normally, but there is definitely a stalky thing that happens for men as well, and you have to be slightly careful.'
Maintaining Friendship After Romance
Despite the end of their romantic relationship, both Peston and Edwardes appear committed to preserving their friendship. Peston stated simply: 'Charlotte and I remain very good friends.' Edwardes, whose debut novel 'Trouble Was' is scheduled for publication in July, declined to comment further on the split.
Peston, who serves as ITV News's political editor and co-hosts the weekly political discussion show 'Peston', had previously spoken about feeling 'desperately guilty' about falling in love again after his wife's death. The current split represents another emotional challenge for the prominent broadcaster as he navigates both his public career and private life in the media spotlight.
