Unborn Baby Dies After Police Chase Crash in London

A heavily pregnant woman tragically lost her baby after a car being pursued by police crashed into the vehicle carrying her and her partner in South London.

Incident Details

The crash occurred at around 11:30 PM on Saturday on Lewisham Way in New Cross. Police officers spotted a vehicle with suspected cloned number plates and attempted to stop it. The driver failed to pull over, and a pursuit was authorized. During the chase, the suspect's vehicle collided with another car driven by a man in his 20s, with his heavily pregnant partner in the passenger seat.

Emergency Response

Paramedics, firefighters, and police officers rushed to the scene. The woman was taken to hospital for urgent treatment, but despite medical efforts, her baby died. The woman remains hospitalized in stable condition, while the father-to-be sustained minor injuries.

Arrest and Investigation

The suspected driver, a 29-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, and possession of Class A drugs. He was also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) as standard procedure.

Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton said: "Our thoughts are with the mother and father involved, and their family following the tragic loss of their child." Investigators are working to establish the full circumstances of the collision.
