Two charged after second night of unrest in Northern Ireland

Two people have been charged following a second night of disorder in Northern Ireland after the Belfast knife attack. Twelve police officers were injured and 16 arrests were made during unrest on Wednesday evening. Police used water cannons as officers were pelted with bricks and petrol bombs by balaclava-clad rioters in County Antrim.

Protesters set fire to a barricade as police blocked the Antrim Road at the Sandyknowes roundabout in Newtownabbey. Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson told reporters that the justice system "stands ready to give long sentences to those bringing disorder to our streets."

The violence followed a knife attack in Belfast that has sparked tensions in the region. Authorities have vowed to take firm action against those involved in the unrest.
