Gunshots and fires erupted in New York City late Wednesday night as celebrations for the New York Knicks' first NBA championship in 53 years turned chaotic, coinciding with a World Cup match between Morocco and Brazil.
Knicks Victory Celebrations Turn Violent
Thousands of jubilant fans took to the streets across the city after the Knicks secured their first championship win since 1973. However, the festivities quickly escalated into disorder, with reports of burning vehicles and gunshots near 42nd Street and Broadway. Witnesses described scenes of fans clashing with police, smashing car windshields, and climbing atop light poles and other structures to celebrate.
The New York Police Department confirmed that several individuals were arrested, but official numbers have not yet been released.
World Cup Fans Caught in the Chaos
Football fans in town for the World Cup, which is being held across multiple U.S. cities, witnessed the violent scenes. The Morocco-Brazil match at the New York-New Jersey Stadium (formerly MetLife Stadium) had just concluded when the disturbances began.
The Knicks' victory run coincides with the World Cup tournament, drawing massive crowds not only in New York but also in Boston, Atlanta, Florida, and California, where fans support teams from around the globe.
Celebrities Join the Celebration
The Knicks game attracted a star-studded audience, including Ben Stiller, Timothée Chalamet, Taylor Swift, and ASAP Rocky. Singer Jennifer Lopez celebrated from home, sharing a video of herself cheering and jumping up and down. She expressed her excitement on social media, recalling the Knicks' previous championship run in the 1990s and thanking the team for uniting the city and the world.
England World Cup Team Faces Setback
Meanwhile, the England national football team experienced a dramatic incident of their own. Just days before their World Cup opener against Croatia, key equipment, including football boots belonging to stars like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane, was stolen from vehicles transporting gear to their training base in Kansas City.
The Three Lions, who have been based in Florida since early June, traveled to Kansas City on Friday. Their first training session was scheduled for Saturday afternoon, but the theft has caused concern. Police were on site Friday night, and two arrests have reportedly been made.
