A nurse who was chased and intimidated while traveling to work at Ulster Hospital has been praised for continuing her shift despite the ordeal. The incident involved four masked men, according to a union representative, and has been condemned as a horrific and racist act.
Nurse's Bravery Commended
The South Eastern Trust commended the nurse for her bravery in insisting on working her shift at the hospital on the outskirts of Belfast after being terrified. Health Secretary James Murray described the intimidation as beyond unacceptable, while UUP leader Jon Burrows called the perpetrators traitors to the country.
Union Response
Patricia McKeown, regional secretary for Unison, said many public servants they represent had received threats. This is happening to anyone whether they be nurses or social care workers or working in factories, or living with families across Northern Ireland, she told BBC's Good Morning Ulster programme. Everyone has been targeted who has a different skin colour or who comes from overseas, and there is no excuse for any of this, this is racism pure and simple. Ms McKeown confirmed that alternative accommodation has since been found for the nurse.
Trust Statement
The South Eastern Trust expressed horror at the incident and utterly condemned the racist attack. The trust stated that the nurse bravely insisted on remaining in the Ulster Hospital to care for the most vulnerable in our community. Her behaviour is in stark contrast to the behaviour of the people who terrified her as she tried to do her job. The trust values and champions diversity and inclusion, and thanked all staff for their continued dedication.
Political Reaction
Mr Murray told the Press Association it was absolutely horrific and beyond unacceptable. He expressed sorrow that such an incident happened in the country and emphasized the need to protect NHS staff. He praised the nurse for carrying on and going to work despite what happened, highlighting both the worst and best of the country. Mr Burrows called those who chase and intimidate nurses the scum of the earth and traitors to the country. He urged police to arrest, charge, and remand them, and called for exemplary sentences from judges.
