A 28-year-old Pakistani asylum seeker has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a teenage girl in a park in Nottinghamshire and then repeatedly calling her a 'slut' after the assault.
Details of the Attack
Sheraz Malik was convicted of two counts of rape at Birmingham Crown Court. The court heard that on June 29, 2025, the victim, who was 18 at the time, met Malik at Sutton Lawn in Sutton-in-Ashfield. She was introduced to a group of older men, one of whom raped her. Malik then led her to a secluded area and raped her again.
Sentencing and Judge's Remarks
Judge Simon Ash KC stated that Malik attacked the woman despite knowing she was vulnerable and intoxicated. He said, 'When she tried to resist, you hit her hard to the face and head. Some of the things you said to her did amount to additional degradation and humiliation of her.' Malik was sentenced to 10 years in custody with an additional four years on extended licence.
Investigation and Trial
Police traced Malik to an address in Newcastle and arrested him on July 18. He gave no comment in interviews, even when confronted with DNA evidence linking him to the victim. During his trial, he claimed the sex was consensual, but the jury rejected his account. He was convicted in January 2026.
Background of the Offender
Malik was born in Pakistan and had lived in France, Germany, and Italy before moving to the UK less than 12 months before the attack. On the day of the incident, he had been playing cricket and smoking cannabis in the park.
Impact on the Victim
The attack has left the victim suffering from stress and anxiety. She has struggled to eat and has experienced nightmares. Detective Inspector Nicole Milner of Nottinghamshire Police praised the victim's courage and resilience, stating, 'I hope this sentence brings the victim a sense of justice and reassurance that Malik no longer poses a threat to our community.'
Ongoing Investigation
Police are still searching for another suspect involved in the attack. DI Milner said, 'This remains a complex and demanding investigation, and one that continues to be a priority for Nottinghamshire Police as we pursue our enquiries to locate and arrest a further suspect.'
