A massive fire has erupted at a recycling centre in Bermondsey, London, with dense black smoke billowing over the Rotherhithe and Canada Water areas. The inferno, located on Landmann Way, has triggered a significant emergency response, with 15 fire engines and approximately 100 firefighters at the scene.
The London Fire Brigade is urging the public to 'please avoid the area while the incident is ongoing'. The incident was first reported around 5:30 PM, prompting crews from Deptford, Old Kent Road, Greenwich, and nearby fire stations to rush to the scene.
As firefighters persist in battling the blaze, two of the Brigade's 32-metre turntable ladders have been utilised, enabling crews to combat the fire from above.
Impact on Tube Services
Tube passengers have been impacted, with trains to and from London Bridge and Victoria experiencing delays, diversions, and cancellations, reports the Express. A commuter described a frightening encounter with the Bermondsey blaze after passing the scene on a train. The passenger, travelling home from Orpington to London Bridge, said their carriage filled with smoke as the train went by the fire. They claimed the train windows became extremely hot and that some passengers screamed as they passed the burning site.
South Eastern is urging passengers travelling from London Bridge and Charing Cross to check before setting off as disruption caused by the fire continues. In its latest update, Southeastern said passengers should 'check before you travel and consider delaying your journey until later where possible' while emergency services deal with the incident next to the railway.
Ongoing Disruption
National Rail warned that disruption could last until 10:30 PM tonight. In a statement, they said: 'Emergency services are currently dealing with a fire in the London Bridge area. Rail services are currently disrupted. Fires in railway areas present a serious safety risk, as they can damage signalling equipment, power systems and track infrastructure, and create unsafe conditions for trains and staff.'
