Welsh Tourist Hotspot Faces Jet-Ski Speeders and Litter Crisis
Welsh Tourist Hotspot: Jet-Ski Speeders and Litter Crisis

A popular Welsh tourist destination is facing significant challenges, including speeding jet-skiers and litter-covered beaches, according to a new council report. The report, prepared by harbour master Matthew Forbes, warns that evidence is being collected that could lead to prosecutions for those breaking the law.

Jet-Ski Speeding Concerns

The harbour master's report highlights that a minority of personal watercraft (PWC) riders continue to exceed the 10-knot speed limit within Conwy harbour. Working with the local CCTV unit, harbour staff are recording infractions and issuing warning letters. The report states: 'When sufficient evidence is available to be confident of discharging the criminal burden of proof, i.e. beyond a reasonable doubt, a prosecution will be sought.'

Clear warning signs are displayed at the Beacons slipway and the exits to Conwy and Deganwy marinas, with two yellow special marks denoting the limits of the speed-restricted area. Despite these measures, some riders persist in breaking the rules.

Litter Problems During Heatwave

The report also addresses the impact of a recent heatwave, which led to a surge in beach activity and subsequent litter problems. Harbour staff spent mornings collecting litter from beaches and promenades, diverting resources from other tasks. Up to 20 bags of litter were removed daily during this period.

The issues will be discussed at the Harbour Advisory Committee meeting at Conwy County Council's Coed Pella headquarters on Wednesday, June 10. The committee is expected to consider further actions to address both the speeding and litter concerns.

Conwy, known for its historic castle and scenic coastline, attracts numerous tourists each year. The council hopes that increased enforcement and public awareness will help preserve the area's natural beauty and ensure safety for all visitors.
