Senator Adam Schiff, a California Democrat and former federal prosecutor serving on the Senate Judiciary Committee, has released a statement opposing the permanent confirmation of Todd Blanche as Attorney General. Schiff argues that Blanche has continued to act as Donald Trump's personal criminal defense lawyer instead of representing the American people.
Schiff's Allegations Against Blanche
In his statement, Schiff highlights several instances of alleged misconduct. He points to Blanche's support for the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey over a social media post featuring seashells arranged to read '86 47,' a reference to Trump's potential 47th presidency. Schiff also criticizes Blanche for decreeing that Trump and his family should be exempt from prosecution or IRS audits. Additionally, Schiff condemns Blanche's approval of a $1.776 billion fund meant to reward Trump supporters who claim political persecution.
Full Statement from Senator Schiff
Schiff's statement reads: 'At every turn, Todd Blanche has been unable to put aside his role as Donald Trump's criminal defense lawyer and represent the American people instead. He has allowed the President to abuse the Department of Justice to go after his political enemies with absurd seashells cases, engaged in the most blatant self-dealing by representing both Trump and his government in an IRS scam, and blessed a corrupt slush fund for cop beaters. This is hardly the stuff of Attorneys General. The Senate must vigorously oppose his confirmation.'
The statement underscores Schiff's view that Blanche's actions demonstrate a lack of independence and integrity required for the nation's top law enforcement officer. Schiff, a prominent figure in the Senate, calls for robust opposition to Blanche's confirmation, urging his colleagues to reject what he sees as a politicized Department of Justice under Blanche's leadership.
