Ben Stokes is set to be cut from England's squad for their second Test against New Zealand following an incident in a nightclub. The ECB confirmed earlier this week that they were investigating after it was alleged that Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were involved in a clash in Chelsea on Monday morning.
A statement read: "The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place. We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed and we will provide a further update when possible."
The incident apparently involved both Stokes, Atkinson, a member of ECB security staff and a Saracens rugby player. And it appears that the England captain is set to lose his place in the squad as a consequence.
According to The Guardian, Stokes is highly unlikely to be included in the squad for the second Test against New Zealand. The England and Wales Cricket Board are apparently determined to bring the situation under control before the start of the Women's World Cup on Friday, while a temporary end of Stokes' time as captain is due to be confirmed.
Reports have already suggested that Stokes is considering his England future. Meanwhile, Atkinson is also unlikely to play in the second Test, but there is a belief that move is an attempt to safeguard his mental health rather than a formal suspension. Investigations by all parties remain ongoing.
A statement from Saracens read: "We are aware of an incident involving an academy player connected to Saracens on Sunday evening. The club is currently establishing the full facts and is in contact with the relevant authorities and individuals involved. Once this process is complete, the matter will be reviewed and addressed appropriately. We will make no further comment at this time."
Stokes and Atkinson helped England complete a 115-run win in the first Test of the summer over New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday. England players are forced to abide by a midnight curfew after making headlines for an apparent drinking culture during their miserable Ashes tour in Australia.
