Two bodies, believed to be those of children, have been discovered inside a home in the Blue Mountains foothills after a devastating fire early Monday morning. The father and four other children managed to escape the blaze, which destroyed the residence in the small town of Bowen Mountain, New South Wales.
Firefighters Unable to Enter Due to Intensity
Emergency services were called to the home on Lieutenant Bowen Drive just after 2:10 a.m., arriving five to eight minutes later. Approximately 60 firefighters from Fire and Rescue NSW and the Rural Fire Service worked to bring the inferno under control. NSW Fire and Rescue assistant commissioner Andrew Faunce stated that the fire was so intense upon arrival that structural collapse had already begun, making it unsafe for firefighters to enter for rescue or search operations. Defensive measures were deployed initially, with offensive searching commencing after 3:30 a.m.
Two Bodies Found
Police superintendent Nadine Roberts confirmed that two bodies were located—one upstairs and one downstairs—believed to be the two missing children. However, she emphasized that formal identification awaits a coroner's investigation. The family, comprising six children aged three to 16 and their father in his 30s, was due to relocate to Queensland on Monday. The mother had already traveled ahead and was not present during the fire.
Survivors Hospitalized
The four surviving children and their father were taken to hospital, where they are being treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns. Police reported that they are otherwise in stable condition. The mother is returning to be with her family.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but authorities stated it is not currently considered suspicious. Superintendent Roberts expressed condolences to the family and community, acknowledging the traumatic impact on first responders as well.
